Born in the Big Apple in the state of New York, Diane was the daughter of drama coach, Burt Lane. Soon into the family business, Diane was a child actor, performing in a range of theatrical plays including The Cherry Orchard and Agamemnon at Lincoln Center. In 1978, Lane received critical acclaim for her portrayal of the lead in the off-Broadway hit Runaways. When she was 13 she made her film debut opposite Sir Laurence Olivier in A Little Romance.

Lane’s enchanting combination of sexuality and innocence made her popular with adolescent audiences and even landed her on the cover of Time magazine.

Diane went on to do television and starred opposite Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange in A Streetcar Named Desire. Her performance in the award winning mini-series Lonesome Dove earned her an Emmy nomination for her role opposite Robert Duvall. She also starred with Donald Sutherland, Cicely Tyson and Anne Bancroft in the critically acclaimed epic mini-series Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All.

Lane’s career took an upward curve after director Francis Ford Coppola, became her mentor and provided Lane with roles in films such as The Outsiders (1983), Rumble Fish (1983), and The Cotton Club (1984).

The ’90s saw Diane co-starring in a number of hit and miss films, such as Judge Dredd (1995); Jack (1996), opposite Robin Williams; Murder at 1600 (1997) opposite Wesley Snipes; and The Only Thrill (1998).

In 2003, she received her first Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her performance in Unfaithful (2002). Next, she starred in Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), which earned her another Golden Globe nomation. In 2003, she received the Actress of the Year award at the Hollywood Film Festival as well as a ShoWest Award as Female Star of the Year.
